White NATIONAL REGISTER CRITERIA STATEMENT (if applicable) 125 Jackson St meets Criterion A as one of the earliest extant structures remaining in Newton Centre.
Criterion C is met in that 125 Jackson St is a well-preserved example of a vernacular farmhouse of the Georgian period. ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE Describe important architectural features and evaluate in terms of other buildings within the community. 125 Jackson St is a traditional 2t-story, .gable-roofed farmhouse, oased on a two-room, central hall plan and organized around a five-bay facade. There are two interior chimneys on the ridge. Greek Revival modifications include the wide, panelled corner boards and. Dorio- of an earlier structure, which had been built by 1768..The present nouse may have been constructed on the foundation of the earlier house. The crown mouldings of the first-story windows are unusual for a house of the 1790s.
Greek Revival features were probably added during an 1850s remodelling. The design of the interior is said to have relied heavily on the use of English pattern books of the Georgian period. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE Explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the community. In 1768 Abraham Jackson is recorded as having taken a mortgage on 3 acres, a house and barn and woodland. In 1782 the house was sold to Aaron Richards of Dedham, a carpenter. It is possible that Richards built the present house on the foundations of Abraham Jackson's earlier structure. After Richard's death in 1823 the property, including 60 acres, was sold to Ephraim Jackson, Jr. for $3,500. One parcel consisted of dwelling house with 13 acres and outbuildings.
