Date November 1976, April 1986 NATIONAL REGISTER CRITERIA STATEMENT (if applicable) The Amos Judkins House is an exceptional local example of Queen Anne style architecture which has survived virtually intact. It thus meets criterion C of the National Register of Historic Places. ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE Describe important architectural features and evaluate in terms of other buildings within the conmunity.
Based loosely on the mid-19th-century medieval manor houses erected in England by Richard Norman Shaw, the design of 8 Central Avenue displays the esvered vien boch inventiveness that characterized the American Queen Anne style. The building's overall form is irregular, and the wall areas, covered with both clapboards and decorative wood shingles, contain recessed balconies and a complex pattern of asymmetrical projections, all of which are heavily ornamented with turned balusters, paneling, incised decoration, and scrollwork. The front porch, facing Central Avenue, has a gabled entry with dropped returns, and the side elevation features both a porte-cochere and glazed conservatory. The high clustered chimneys, especially the front exterior chimney with curved shoulders, are very characteristic of the more elaborate versions of Queen Anne design.
HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE Explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the community. Amos C. Judkins (1838-1906), a native of Maine, built this large Queen Anne style residence in 1884. He moved to this large corner lot from a house in the same neighborhood at Lowell and Watertown streets. Judkins was in the railroad car wheel manufacturing business in Boston for much of his life, but in his retirement he played a key role in the development of this section of Newtonville. With John H. Lothrop, who also lived on Central Avenue, he bought large tracts of land in the Crafts/Watertown streets area, which were subdivided into house lots during the late 1880s and 1890s. Judkins Street, located directly across from his home off Crafts Street, was named after him. After his death in 1906, the house reverted to his widow, Mary F.
