Because of its associations with John Parker, one of the area's early settlers, and Ebenezer Stone, a prominent figure in local affairs 137 Suffolk Road meets uriterion B.
As one of relatively few early eighteenth century structures remaining in Newton the Kingsbury House meets Criterion C. ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE Describe important architectural features and evaluate in terms of other buildings within the community. It is possible that portions of this house were built by John Parker during the 1680s. The massive central chimney was a typical l7th c. feature. However, the gable roof, fenestration and entrance are more representative c. farmhouses. Although this structure has been moved from its original site and somewhat altered, it retains the compact lines, møsive central chimney facade organization of a traditional Georgian farmhouse. The crown mouldings and tall vertical proportions of the windows have been retained, although the 6/9 moveable sash is probably not original. The windows of the upper story are framed into the cornice.
Narrow corner boards and saltbox profile are characteristic features of this house. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE Explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the community. In 1686 John Parker, a carpenter, left 11 acres and a dwelling house and 7 acres of meadow and woodland to his son John, Jr. John Parker, Jr. sold to Ebenezer Stone of Newton orn, one "mansion house" with barns Ebenezer Stone (1662-1754) probably built this house (137 Suffolk Rd) in c.1700. Stone was a representative to the Gen'1. Çourt in 1729, Selectman from 1705-06, and a member of the First Parish. His descendants were farmers in Chestnut Hill until the end of the 19th c. In 1817 John Stone, yeoman, sold the property to John Kingsbury of Brookline. Kingsbury and his offspring were major land owners in Chestnut Hill and Oak Hill throughout the 19th c.
Isaac Kingsbury, John's grandson, was city clerk from 1883-1911, and acquired the old house. However, he resided at 360 Hammond St and rented this house to Chas. Burrage. In 1896 Edwin Webster bought the property and the old house was moved to its present location, to make way for Mr. Webster's new house.
