White 3/86 NATIONAL REGISTER CRITERIA STATEMENT (if applicable) The Souther House is an outstanding example of the Queen Anne manner in its middle phase and therefore meets Criterion C of the National Register of Historic Places. ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE Describe important architectural features and evaluate in terms of other buildings within the community.
The Souther House represents a fullblown version of the Queen Anne manner in its middle phase. Though the house appears complicated, it is basically a rectangular block capped by a hip roof. The form is augmented by gables on all elevations, a common Queen Anne solution. The gables are of varying size and placement. This house makes extensive use of cut wood shingles laid in a variety of patterns. The focal point of the design is the round corner tower with a conical roof capped by a copper ball Îinial. The soaring brick chimney is another typical Queen Anne device, as are the several porches at both the first and second stories. The porches are adorned with bulbous turned posts. The corner tower is further embellished with a contoured panel of mastic ornament in a foliated pattern. The carriage house has an ogival turret.
HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE Explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the community. John Souther, an early occupant of this house, sold machinery in Boston. He was typical of the prosperous merchants and manufacturers who commuted to Boston from Newton Corner during the latter part of the nineteenth century. The Souther House was built on land which was formerly part of the Brackett estate, which in 1875 extended well beyond both sides of Fairmont Avenue.
