Date March 1978, April 1986 NATIONAL REGISTER CRITERIA STATEMENT (if applicable) This complex built as the house (77 Temple Street) and carriage barn (85 Temple Street) of a single estate, are now two separate residences. As a wel1-preserved and elaborately detailed example of Queen Anne architecture, the Joseph L. Stone House and carriage barn meet criterion C of the National Register of Historic Places. ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE Describe important architectural features and evaluate in terms of other buildings within the community. A front-gabled main block forms the basis for the design of this well-preserved Queen Anne period residence.
The composition is balanced, with offset projections flanking a central recessed area that contains an unusual second-level balcony. Above is an extended jerkin head at the gable peak. Built with brick at the first story, the house is trimmed with patterned shingles, scroll-sawn woodwork in the porch and side porte-cochere, and applied wooden panels reminiscent of Tudor-era English architecture. many of the Queen The gable-roofed carriage barn, though sheathed in clapboards, exhibits Anne atributes of the house including recessed areas and projecting areas. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE Explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the community. Joseph L. Stone purchased this property in October 1880 from Charlotte Davison, then subdividing land in this area of Temple Street.
The present house and carriage barn were completed the following year. Stone (1814-1889), was a native and life-long businessman of Boston, and one of the city's "best known bankers and brokers." In partnership with Cutler Downer, he had a substantial banking and Custom House brokerage business. After his death, the house was purchased by Stephen W. Reynolds, president of the Mexican Central Railroad, though he seems to have lived here less than ten years, removing to Boston about 1898. BIBLIOGRAPHY and/or REFERENCES "Joseph L.
