Date 2/77, rev. by H.White 3/86 TIONAL REGISTER CRITERIA STATEMENT (if applicable) The Thayer House is an unusual example of the Carpenter Gothic cottage house form in Newton Corner and therefore meets Criterion C of the National Register of Historic Places. CHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE Describe important architectural features and evaluate in terms of :her buildings within the community. Three steeply-pitched facade gables clad with flush-boarding adorn the street elevation of this unusual Carpenter Gothic cottage. The building's trim is testimony to the inventiveness in wood ornament that resulted from the invention of the scroll saw. scrolled trim embellishes the window lintels.
Leaf and Iloral motifs Ieat and floral notorste are applied to the gable fields. The corner pilasters have unusual capitals with cyma-curved metal ribbons. As with many Gothic Revival cottages, this residence retains several Greek Revival features, including pedimented end gables and Ionic porch columns incorporated in an enclosed vestibule. A Mansard-roofed ell is attached to the rear of the house. STORICAL SIGNIFICANCE Explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the lilding relates to the development of the community. This house was owned in 1868 by Stephen 0.
