Date 5/83: rev. by H.ihite 3/86 NATIONAL REGISTER CRITERIA STATEMENT(if applicable) The Ephraim Ward House is important as one of relatively few wel1-preserved Federal period dweilingsithe eastern half of the city. It has associations with the ward family, farmers and owners of large amounts of land in the area during the nineteenth century. As such it meets Criteria B and C of the National Register of Historic Places.
ARCHITECTURALSIGNIFICANCE Describe importantarchitectural features and evaluate in terms of other buildings within the community. The Zohraim Ward house is a blocky rectangular form, 2t-stories in height, with a hip roof of lowpitch. The five-bay facade is organized with the outer windows paired and the center window aligned with the narrow. entrance. The entrance is flanked by slender applied pilasters supporting a panelled entablature. The 6/6 windows have plain surrounds. A single rear-wall chimney remains on the north wall. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE Explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the communitý. In 1661 John Ward built a house on this site known as the Garrison House. The house is said to have been a refuge for safety during King Philip's iar.
In 1821 the house was torn down, and replaced with the present structure by Iphraim Ward. Seven generations of the ward family had occupied the original house, and continued to occupy the present house until 1974. The Ward family began to sell of parcels of its farmland during the late nineteenth century. In 1906 John Ward wrote Recollections of An Early Home, a manuscript now in the Jackson Homestead archives. The work traces the history of the house and the farming accomplishments of the Nard family. The family raised cattle, and had extensive fruit. orchards in addition to raising traditional crops. Ephraim Ward and his brothers (who lived nearby at 184 and 303 Ward Street) owned adjoining acreage, with the cattle and equipment kept at this address. Ephraim's son Thomas and his wife Hannah inherited the farm and continued working it until after 1900.
