White 3/86 NATIONAL REGISTER CRITERIA STATEMENT (if applicable) The house at 68 Maple Street is an outstanding and rare example in Newton of an early Italianate dwelling of thesquare, hipped-roof heavy type and therefore meets criterion C of the National Register of Historic Places. ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE Describe important architectural features and evaluate in terms of other buildings within the community. The Bracketed Italianate style enjoyed widespread popularity in Newton from the late 1840s until about 1870. The style was inspired not by the Italian Renaissance as its name would suggest, but rather by English country houses of the early nineteenth century.
Working in this style, Yankee housewrights and carpenters sometimes endowed their designs with extraordinary ornamentation, made possible by jigsaws and lathes. This tendency toward over-ornamentation was sometimes referred to as "carpenters' frenzy." The wooden bracket was used in an infinite variety. In vernacular examples such as. 68 Maple Street, the bracket was grafted onto Italianate forms, and in this case is the only distinctive feature of a simple building. The brackets are in the form of over- scaled, acanthus decorated consoles and appear at the overhanging HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE Explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the community. Henry M. Bates, a Boston banker, occupied this diminutive Italian built on a bluff which once commanded a picturesque view of the nearby Charles River.
The architectural publications of A.J. Downing promoted the Italian villa style as appropriate for the scenic rural landscape, and 68 Maple Street is one of several notable examples in the Charlesbank area of Newton Corner. The boxy form of the house is capped by a hip roof of low pitch and is clad in rusticated flush-boarding to simulate ashlar masonry.
