Historically, the property is significant as a documentation of Washington's pattern of dispersed, isolated settlement, a pattern that persisted long after other rural Massachusetts hill towns had devel oped nucleated village centers.
The property's changing use from agricultural to recreational reflects city dwellers' discovery of Washington's bucolic virtues in recent years. (continued) ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE Describe important architectural features and evaluate in terms of other buildings within the community. The C1ark-Eames House is a wel1-preserved example of a modest Federal-style cottage. One and a half stories in height with a center chimney set forward of the ridge, the building is five bays wide. by a spindled and bracketed portico with a gable roof, a late 19th century addition. Ornamentation is otherwise limited to simple window en framements with shallow lintels, corner boards, and raking cornice. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE Explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the community.
One of the few intact Federal-period houses in Washington, the nominated building was seat of a farm of some 70 acres for much of the 19th century. It is presently used as a vacation residence and occupies a lot of less than two acres- It remains in a rural setting.
