Historical Comnission Date June 1935 NATIONAL REGISTER CRITERIA STATEMEN (if applicable) The Philip Eames House, Washington's most imposing mid 19th century residence, retains integrity of location, design, setting, materials, workmanship, feeling, and association.
The well-preserved building is Washington's only stone house and displays finely articulated late Federal/early Greek Revival-style detailing. It fulfils Criterion C of the National Register of Historic Places on the local level. ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE Describe important architectural features and evaluate in terms of other buildings within the community. The Philip Eames House, built in 1843, is Washington's most imposing and best- tes houde is simitar toth thers fine oash in geotra en ts dis, dgutseedile It is distinguished, however, by its execution in stone, its fine detailing, and its unusually intact state of preservation. The building is 2 1/2 stories in height, with a stone chimney at each end of the gable roof. The entryway is embellished with an elliptical fan and full-length sidelights, set within a keyed arch and four tapered pilasters of smooth-cut granite.
An enclosed pediment at each gable end is also composed of granite blocks. 6/6 sash windows are ascented with granite lintels and sills. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE Explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the community. The Philip Eames House was built in 1843 on 1and close by the path of the Western Railroad, which began construction through Washington in 1838. .The route over difficult terrain required the removal of vast quantities of rock to create a half-mile cut 55 feet deep. The Eames House was constructed of quarried granite said to have been block-cut from Summit Rock, the point through which the line was blasted. Eames' birthplace, built in 1764, stood to the north and east of the nominated property until the early 20th century.
During the 1850s, Philip Eames owned one of several saw mills, which thrived during the town's brief period of prosperity in the wake of the railroad's construction. In the early 20th century, the house was owned by an avid gardener, who was responsible for the construction of a sizable greenhouse on the property.
