STATUS: Urmanned/Active LIGHTHOUSES Uri. suruowli THEMATIC GROUP NOMINATION Lighthouse #F28 page 1 SITE DESCRIPTION Ned Point Light is located at the northeast end of Mattapoisett Harbor on Buzzard's Bay in an open park owned by the town. right of way over a drive into the park. house. A busy port in the mid-19th century, Mattapoisett tended to be frozen over for long periods. In 1930, the frame keeper's house originally on the site was floated by barge to Wing's Neck in Pocasset (Bourne) across Buzzard's Bay and placed alongside the Wing's Neck Light (#41).

LIGHTHOUSES OF MASSACHUSETTS THEMATIC GROUP NOMINATION Lighthouse #28 MAJOR ELEMENTS DESCRIPTION page 2 1837, 35 foot whitewashed stone tower with sloping sides surmounted by an iron 1antern. The oil house (1837) is intact, also built of stone blocks and whitewashed. The foundation is circular and of concrete construction. The door is applied to the exterior with no frame and set into an opening at ground level. It is composed of two narrow cast iron doors, attached with wide straps. Its stone lintel 1s whitewashed. The three windows in the light are now closed up with stone; all have stone sills. The balcony is of cast iron, resting on a ledge rather than brackets. The railing is of a later date with a vertical grid of plain square balusters within two horizontal rails and an upper rail (nine balusters to a section).

The lantern room is a conventional eight sided cast iron structure with a round ventilator ball and a lightning rod. Edwards, sold 4 acres to the United States for $240.

1837 - 35' stone tower topped by 5' 8" cast iron lantern built for $4500 by Leonard Hammond, Government Lighthouse contractor. Also oil house, Keeper's Dwelling, and barn constructed. 3/21/1838 - Tamps Tighted (11 fixed white lights). 1869 - sea wall destroyed. 1888 - sea wall rebuilt. 1880's - Second Keeper's House built- standard wood frame, cross gable plan with one story rear ell (see Wing's Neck Light, # 41); original main facade contains on Li a single window with tab hood and, in L2 gable, a single window. Porch (left): original door; stair window under eave; on adjacent wall and at right angles is a 6/6 window. Rear porch is one story with a modern double window; the porch has been enclosed. Side elevations contain original 6/1 window on L2; Ll window is a modern replacement. 1920 - house moved by lighter across Buzzards Bay to Wing's Neck, Pocasset (Bourne).

3/10/1952 - part of property sold for $3000. 2/14/1949 - act to cede land to U.S. Government. 1955 - additional sale of land for $5690. 6/30/1958 - all land and structures except 0.1774 acres (tower and right of way) sold to town of Mattapoisett for public park (present use). 6/1/1961 - Reactivate light, "CG has a continuing need for this navigational aid as well as the underlying land." Dating from 1827, the remaining light and oilhouse are well preserved examples of masonry construction, which retain their relationship to each other and to Mattapoisett Harbor. Ned Point Light meets criteria A and C of the National Register of Historic Places on the state level as well as survey criteria le, Site Considerations: This light is located in a picturesque position in a town owned and maintained park.
