This is the largest of the Elizabeth 3 rtse %5.30 ret raoie ol tar and snc buact ina nesdol covernd wits anl grass and low scrub growth. A marker on the site states "This cove was widely used in sailing days as a shelter dur ing storm or while awaiting favorable winds. Pirates used it in the 17th century as a base to prey on shipping in the Sound . . .

Metal Staircase (sandblasted) with wooden banister rail. The wooden walls of the Lamp Room were removed and the brick repointed, Summer 1981. LIGHTHOUSES OF MASSACHUSETTS THEMATIC GROUP NOMINATION Lighthouse #38 page 3 CHRONOLOGICAL HISTORY: 6/20/1816 - Land ceded from Commonwealth of Massachusetts; 11/14/1817 - additional land purchased for $216; light first manned; the white brick light tower, 38' high, 19' diameter, was constructed on a concrete foundation.
The cost was $10,000; Keeper's Dwelling (2 story, wood frame, 25' X 26" with 11' X 16" wing; 1500 square feet; basement), was built for $3000; tower remodeled; 1938 - 1951 - hurricane destroyed fog bell and it was discontinued; tower cleaned, painted, and whitewashed; candlepower reduced from 4500 to 700; 1/6/1962 - Keepers Dwelling and other buildings (?) had deteriorated to "state of collapse" and were demolished. Lighthouse #38 page 4 LEVEL OF SIGNIFICANCE Tarpaulin Cove Light possesses integrity of location, des ign, setting, materials and workmanship as well as associations with the development of aids to navigation in Massachusetts.
Constructed in 1856, it is a good example of a mid-nineteenth century light and is one of the few historic structures on the island of Naushon. Overlook ing a picturesque cove, it also possesses important scenic qualities. It meets criteria A and C of the NRHP on the state level as well as survey criteria 2a, 3a.
