It meets National Register criteria A and C at the local ievel and retains integrity of setting, location, materials, workmanship, design.
feeling, and association. The boundaries indicated on the attached assessors map are those of current ownership. ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE Describe important architectural features and evaluate in terms of other buildings within the community. This house is an early example of a Victorian style residence in Southbridge. Victorian characteristics seen here are the high pitched roof with a jerkinhead gable, bargeboard, poly- chrome roof slating and the asymmetrical treatment of the main facade. The paneled ornament around one set of ground floor facade windows is an unusual feature which may have an English Gothic derivation. A similar design and the same sort of window treatment, although altered, can be seen on a house of the same approximate period at 112 Hamilton Street. The "wrap-around" form of "Beechwood's" front porch is a typical feature of later Victorian houses.
Here, however, it has the massiveness, design and proportions of the porches of Italianate houses of the 1850's and 1850's. Porches with a similar arched design motif can be seen on the nearby Italianate-Second Empire style J. J. Oakes House (form #D-440) or the house at 112 Hamilton Street_and on the Italianate Chamberlain-Bourdeau House (form #A-134). Ioday "Beechwood" is in an excellent state of preservation. Set in a spacious lawn, with the house still retains a strong 19th-century feeling about it. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE Explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the community. "Beechwood" was one of the first houses to be built near the intersection of Main and South streets as that area began to develop into what by 1898 was to become an upper class residential area.
At the time of its construction, this end of South Street was still undeveloped. Built by Jedidiah Marcy as a wedding gift for his granddaughter, Mrs. A. J. Bartholomew, the house - was considered one of the most beautiful estates in Worcester County. Wood was brought from nearby Marcy Woods to build the house. Jedidiah Marcy was a descendant of the first settler of Southbridge, Moses Marcy. At the time of the construction of "Beechwood" the original 18th-century Marcy homestead stood across Main Street on the site of the present Notre Dame Church. The land on which "Beechwood" was built was apparently part of the original Marcy estate.
