Marcy House is significant for its association with the town's late- 19th century real estate development and its stylish Queen Anne design. It meets National Register criterion:. C at the local level and retains integrity of setting, location, materials, workmanship, design, feeling, and association. The boundaries indicated on the attached assessors map are those of current ownership, drawn to include both the house and barn. ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE Describe importantarchitectural features and evaluate in terms of other buildings within the community.
This fine, well preserved Queen Anne style is both large and elaborate. Iypical of the style are the horizontal lines, asymmetrical design, picturesque silhouette and broad roofs. Of note is the richness of exterior surface texture created by the clapboard, three patterns of shingling, carved ornamental strips, bracketed eaves, slate roofs and the patterned brick- work in the chimneys. This house compares in size and design caliber to the Victorian style A.M. Cheney House (form #C-323) of about the same period. The original lawn size of the Marcy House has been diminished by the construction of smaller houses around it during the early-20th century. Although it still dominates South Street, it looks somewhat precarious perched on its hilltop site without the vastness of open lawns around it to soften the impact of its mass.
HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE Explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the community. First shown on the 1898 atlas, this house was listed as the property of Mrs. R. Marcy. Mrs. R. Marcy was Rinda Marcy, the widow of Merrick A. Marcy. No information has been found to indicate who Merrick Marcy was. He must, however, have been a member of the Marcy family which settled in Southbridge in the 1730's. Marcy homestead which was still in the family stood nearby at Main and Marcy Streets, now the site of Notre Dame Church: This section of South Street saw very little building activity between the 1840's and 1880's. During that period it was still largely undeveloped. During the 1880's a row of Stick Style houses was built on the south side of the street near Main Street.
This was one of three houses to be built on the north side in the block between Main and Oakes Street before 1900.
