Ceccacci Organization Southbridge Historical Com- mission Date May 1986 NATIONAL REGISTER CRITERIA STATEMENT (if applicable) The Clarke-Glover House is significant for its association with Southbridge's persistant agricultural economy and its regionally important gable-front, Greek Revival form.
It meets National Register criteria A and C at the local level and retains integrity of setting, location, workmanship, design, feeling, and association. The boundaries indicated on the attached assessors map are those of current ownership. ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE Describe important architectural features and evaluate in terms of other buildings within the community. Said to have been altered from its original (ca. 1830's ) appearance, this fine, broadly proportioned Greek Revival house may have been built as a Federal style house with entrance in the four bay side and similar to the George Sumner House (form #A-|54) (ca. 1812-1830) on Paige Hill Road.
The elaborate Greek Revival ornament which distinguishes the house in its present form includes a matchboard facade pediment, heavy cornices, a wide frieze with architrave, paneled corner pilasters and pedimented first floor window caps. The entrance is accented with a heavy doorframe, 3/4 sidelights and a broad transom. The assymmetrical placement of the windows and entrance toward the left side of the facade may be the result of a change from a four bay to a three bay treatment when the house was remodeled. Quinebaug Historical Society Leaflets as "an old landmark...remodeled to some extent." According to this same source, it was earlier known as the Lemuel Clarke house. The first settler on the property was said to have been Moses Clarke, no eartir settlers are documented. The Southbridge - Vital Records lists daughters being born to Lemuel Clark (sic) in 1815 and 1817 and the death - of his wife, Sally, age 72, in 1845. This information and the result of a study of maps for the period suggest that Clark may have built the house after 1830 and lived here until some- The smaller house at the rear of the property, now on Glover Street (see form #D-45b), may have been the original house of Moses Clark. It would have been built after 1796, as it does not appear on the 1812 map made from a 1796 survey. Only one house in this general location is seen on the 1830 map.
Therefore, the present Glover house may have been built shortly after 1830 by Clark and remodeled around mid-century by Glover. R. Glover is shown as the owner on the 1855, 1870 and 1878 maps of both houses. In 1878 the property included 40 undeveloped acres. Sometime during the 1880's or 1890's an extension of High Street and Glover Street were cut through the property. By 1898 it had been extensively developed. The house lot of the Glover house had been reduced to its present size and the A. H. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE (cont'd) This section of South Street is known to have been settled with scattered farmhouses as early as 1796. South Street, between High and West Streets, was developed in the early to mid- 19th century, first as a neighborhood of established families and later included industrialist. and successful merchants. Located on the outskirts of the more thickly settled section of Globe Village, it was typified in the mid-19th century by scattered houses in a semi-rural setting.
During the late-19th and early-20th century, vacant lots along South Street were filled and open land south of it was developed mostly with middle income houses. ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE (cont'd) a simple iron fence and a Victorian style fountain (apparently not original) all lend an air of mid-19th century authenticity to the grounds.
