Stone House is significant for its association with Southbridge's Globe Village development and its regionally important gable-front, Greek Revival form.
It meets National Register criteria A and Cat the local level and retains integrity of setting, location, workmanship, design, feeling, and association. The boundaries indicated on the attached assessors map are those of current ownership. ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE Describe important architectural features and evaluate in terms of other buildings within the community. One of the more vernacular interpretations of the Greek Revival style found along South Street, the Lorenzo Stone House is less imposing in its scale and in the plain treatment of its main entrance. Built on the typical three bay, side entry, gable front plan, the two-and-a-half story house does have certain fine and substantial Greek Revival details such as, paneled corner boards, a wide frieze and a pediment with frieze trim within it.
Unusual details are the small porch with a Doric column on the east side and a recessed entrance on the west side of the rear portion. The smaller size of the house and its vernacular character relate it more to the middle class houses of the same general style and period nearby in the High-Sayles Street area. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE Explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the community. This section of South Street is known to have been settled with scattered farmhouses by 1812, and apparently earlier. South Street between High and West Streets developed in the early-to- mid-19th century first as a neighborhood of established families and later also of industrialist and successful merchants.
Located on the outskirts of the more thickly settled section of Globe Village, the area, by the mid-19th century, was typified by scattered houses in a semi- rural setting. As the Hamilton Mill prospered, Globe Village expanded. This house, because of its similarity to those along High, Sayles and Winter Streets nearby, appears to have been part of that expansion. The High-Sayles-Winter Street houses were owned by foremen, super- visors and skilled craftsmen of the Hamilton Woolen Company. The occupation of the original owner of this house, Lorenzo Stone, is not known. BIBLIOGRAPHY and/or REFERENCES maps, atlases, directories Ammidown, Holmes.
