Morse House is significant for its association with Southbridge's Globe Village development and its regionally important sable-front, Greek Revival form. It meets National Register criteria A and C at the iocal level and retains integrity of location, materiais, workmanship, design, feeling, and association. The boundaries indicated on the aftached assessors map are those of current ownership.
ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE Describe important architectural features and evaluate in terms of other buildings within the community. This two and a half story, side entry gable front house is an excellent example of a typical well-detailed Greek Revival house. The substantial architectural embellishments and the three bay facade with a full pediment are common for the 1840's and 1850's in Southbridge, as well as throughout Worcester County. Typical details seen here are the deep matchboarded pediment, wide frieze with architrave, paneled corner pilasters and an architrave/cornice doorframe. Additions were made to the house between 1855 and 1870 and again between 1870 and 1878. The present ell appears to have been added in the 1870's. Additions to the rear were made at the later date.
HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE Explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the community. This section of South Street developed in the early to mid 19th century, first, as a neighborhood of established families, and later, largely of industrialists and successful merchants. On the outskirts of the more thickly settled Globe Village, it was typified by the mid-19th century by scattered houses in a semi-rural setting. The construction of the H. Morse house seems to have been related to the expansion of the nearby High-Sayles Street residential district where numerous other Greek Revival houses were built in the 1840's and 1850's. The original owner seems to have been the H. Morse shown here in the 1855 Southbridge map. Lyman Morse who occupied the house in the 1870's was listed in the town directory as a farmer.
It is not clear whether or not the open land to the rear of the house at that time was his "farm." In 1878, it belonged to the "Misses Morse." By that time most of the lot to the rear had been developed with houses, an extension of the High- Sayles Street neighborhood.
