It meets National Register criteria A and C at the local level and retains integrity of setting, location, materials, workmanship, design, feeling, and association. The boundaries indicated on the attached assessors map are those of current ownership. ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE Describe important architectural features and evaluate in terms of other buildings within the community. Almost Greek Revival in its appearance, this fire house has an only mildly Victorian corner tower which was originally capped with a mansard roof. It is not clear whether the Greek Revival reference was intentional or whether the building was merely a retardataire vernacular expression. Blocky gable-front buildings of this type sometimes appear in the Colonial Revival style which was popular in the late-19th century.

The gable front Classically-inspired design and the brick construction of the building relate it to nearby Greek Revival brick houses and to some of the Hamilton Woolen mill buildings across the street. It is possible that the design of the fire station was inspired in part by these surroundings. Simple in design, the structure takes its ornament from its gable cornice and returns, oculus window, corner pilasters, corbel table and segmental arched windows and doors. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE Explain the role owners played in Tocal or state history and how the building relates to the development of the community. Until 1832 the only fire apparatus in Southbridge was a tub engine belenging to the Hamilton Woolen Company in Globe Village. In 1832 the town made an appropriation of $350 to be matched b private subscription, to buy a tub engine for the town.

At that same town meeting it was voted to establish volunteer teams to man both the new town engine and the existing apparatus owned by the Hamilton Mill. In February 1833, a few months after Engine Company K1 was established in the center, Globe Village Engine Company*2 was formed. As no fire house is shown in Globe Village on the 1855 map of Southbridge, it is likely that the fire engine was kept in some building belonging to the mill until the town built a fire house about 1860. That fire house, which stood on the north sidé of Main Street just east of the bridge over the river, was used until the present building was built. The last two decades of the 19th-century brought several modernizations to fire protection in Southbridge. In 1880 the old "hand engine companies" were disbanded and a new town fire department was established. During the 1890's two new fire houses were built.

building was built first, in 1894, at a cost of $9,000. Five years later a large imposing brick fire house (form #D-401) was built on Elm Street in the town center to replace the much smaller 1860's fire house on Central Street. During this same period the town was able to boast an ample supply of water for fighting fires, supplied by hydrants and subterranean street reservoirs. A"Gamewell Fire Alarm System"was also functioning at this time. BIBLIOGRAPHY and/or REFERENCES Souvenir of Southbridge 1898. Southbridge : George Grant-Press Print, 1898, pp. 66-69.
