West Street Tenement is significant as rare surviving housing of Southbridge's early mill development at Globe Village, meeting National Register criteria A and C.
It retains integrity of setting, location, materials, workmanship, design, feeling, and association. The boundaries indicated on the attached assessors map are those of current ownership. ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE Describe important architectural features and evaluate in terms of other buildings within the community. The second in a row of four frame tenement houses built by the Hamilton Woolen Mill for its workers, this building is the best preserved. Greek Revival in style, it has four facade bays with entrances on the front and sides. Like other worker housing built during the early to mid-19th century by the company, these tenements show a high degree of architectural pretension.
Bearing the same ornamental details seen on mid and upper income level houses of the day, each of these buildings looks similar to a substantial Greek Revival farmhouse with heavy paneled corner pilasters and a wide entablature on the main facade. Later frame multi- family housing built by Hamilton, such as a group (ca. 1870's) still standing, but altered, on Mill Street, whichwere plainer and less imposing than these. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE Explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the. building relates to the development of the community. This building and those on either side of it composed a group of three apparently identical tenement houses which were already shown standing on the 1855 Southbridge map. A fourth tenement house was built to. the west of these three between 1870 and 1879.
The earlier three buildings were part of an extensive building effort by the Hamilton Woolen Company between the late 1830's and the Civil War which resulted from the success and expansion of the company following the introduction of the manufacture of deslaines in 1844. During this period the manufacturing plant was greatly expanded and housing for managerial, middle level employees and workers were built by the company or under its encouragement.
