Ceccacci Organization Date Southbridge Historical Com- mission May 1986 NATIONAL REGISTER CRITERIA STATEMENT (if applicable) The Hamilton Mill Brick House is significant as rare surviving housing of Southbridge's early mill development at Globe Village, meeting National Register criteria A and C at the local level. It retains integrity of location, materials, workmanship, design, feeling, and association. The boundaries indicated on the attached assessors map are those of current ownership.
ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE Describe important architectural features and evaluate in terms of other buildings within the community. This two and a half story brick house follows the five bay center entry plan traditionally the most popular in New England prior to the mid-19th century. Greek Revival in style, it has a recessed main entrance with multi-divided side lights and transom, pedimented end gables, and granite sills and lintels. The rear facade is three bays with a central entry. One other similar brick house exists from the same period in Southbridge, the Vinton-Torrey Farmhouse (1841) (form #B-244) on Torrey Road. Although the two houses share similar features such as the five bay center entry plan, brick construction and granite sills and lintels, the Hamilton Mill Brick House is the more imposing.
The Vinton-Iorrey House does not have complete end pediments or the deeply recessed entrance of the Hamilton House. Set on a rise overlooking the factory, the Hamilton Mill Brick House was probably the residence of a mill employee serving in a supervisory or executive capacity. (See Continuation Sheet) HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE Explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the buflding relates to the development of the community. Probably contemporary to the Hamilton Millwright/Mill Agent's House, this dwelling was robably built in the 1840's or 1850's at the time of, or just before, the development f the High-Savles Street area as a middle class residential area for Hamilton employees. Shown as the property of the Hamilton Woolen Company, this house first appeared on the 1855 map of Southbridge. and possibly on into the 20th-century.

ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE (cont'd) The use of brick for residential buildings was much more common in Southbridge during the Federal period (especially ca. 1800-1830) than later. However, residential buildings built for the Hamilton Mill during the late 1830's and the 1840's were typically built of brick. For example, the Hamilton Millwright/Mill Agent's House (ca. 1840) (form #D-461), Brick Row, a group of brick worker's houses (1836) (form A-149) and the Girls' Boarding House (ca. 1836?) no longer standing, were all built of brick.
A few brick Greek Revival style houses were also built during the 1840's and 1850's in the mill-sponsored High-Sayles Street residential area nearby. An exception was the row of frame Greek Revival style tenement houses built by. the mill on West Street (form #D-455) around 1840-1850's.
