Ceccacci Organization Southbridge Historical Con- mission Date May 1986 NATIONAL REGISTER CRITERIA STATEMENT (if applicable) The Albert H, Wheeler House is significant for its association with the town's late 79 century real estate development and its adaptation of the familiar gable-front form to the Queen Anne style. It meets National Register criteria A and C at the local level. It retains integrity of setting, location, workmanship, design, feeling, and association.
The boundaries indicated on the attached assessors map are those of current ownership. ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE Describe important architectural features and evaluate in terms of other buildings within the community. This rather straightforward and simple Victorian house is well built and ornamented with Victorian Gothic details such as king-post ornament in the high-pitched gables and paired pointed windows on the second floor. Although the Wheeler house is unpretentious in com- parison to other larger Victorian style houses, such as the A.M. Cheney House (form #C-323) built in Southbridge during the same period, the L-shaped plan, quality detailing and the ample lawn which surrounds it, set this house off from the typical middle class houses of the day. Theapplication of synthetic siding has not impaired the detarlmg of the house.
HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE Explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the community. Albert H. Wheeler was a successful businessman in Globe Village during the late-19th century. After serving in the Union forcesdringthe Civil War, Wheeler returned to Southbridge. He ran a dry goods and clothing. store in Gothic Hall in Globe Village. The actual date of its establishment is not clear. However, it is known to have been operated for some years during the 1880's as Bugbee & Wheeler in partnership with B. U. Bugbee. During the 1890's and on into the early-20th century, it was run as A.H. Wheeler Company. Wheeler died sometime between 1912 and 1919. His widow, Annie, was living in the house as recently as 1928.
Some time after that, and apparently until the late 1940's, the house was owned by American Optical Company as served as housing for its employees.
