Ceccacci Organization Southbridze Historical Com- mission Date Mav 1986 NATIONAL REGISTER CRITERIA STATEMENT (if applicable) The Ashland Mill Tenement is signifiCant as rare surviving housing of Southbridge's early mill development. It meets National Register criteria A and C at the local level and retains integrity of location, materiais, workmanship, design, feeling, and association. The boundaries indicated on the attached assessors map are those of current ownership. ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE Describe important architectural features and evaluate in terms of other buildings within the community.

Resting on a granite foundation this unassuming structure is astylistic in its plainness. It nevertheless bears cornice and window trim typical of the Federal period, suggesting a relatively early date of conscruction. The raised dormers, providing a full floor of living space on the second floor, are apparently original. The only other intact early group of factory houses known to exist in Southbridge is Brick Square (ca. 1837) (form #A-149), associated with the Hamilton Woolen Mill in Globe Village. Unlike the Ashland Mill Tenement, the one-and-a-half story, two family, Greek Revival and Federal style brick houses of Brick Square have much greater architectural pretention. The earliest group of multifamily factory houses known to have been built in Southbridge was a row oi Wooden tenements on Paige Hill Road.

Built about 1815, they were associated with William Sumner's cotton mill (later known as Dresser Manufacturing Company). No documentation of the original appearance of those buildings has been found. It is, therefore, impossible to relate the design of the Ashland Mill Tenements to their only known earlier wood frame predecessor. The Ashland Mill tenement is significant as an early example of factory housing in Southbridge. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE Explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the community. This workers' tenement is located in Sandersdale, a secondary industrial site in the eastern part of Southbridge where Lebanon Brook joins the Quinebaug River. A blacksmith shop was built here about 1815, followed by a saw mill in 1834. A cotton spinning mill, owned by Larkin Ammidown, began operation here in 1834.

It operated under various owners until it burned in 1849. This structure appears to have been one of a row of three or more tenement houses built for operatives of that cotton mill. It seems to be the only remnant of that early industrial endeavor left standing today. began operation at this location, this building is believed also to have served as housing for its workers. Later known as Southbridge Printing Company, that factory functioned as a successful textile printer until the early-20th century. BIBLIOGRAPHY and/or REFERENCES - maps, atlases Ammidown, H.
