Ceccacci Organization Southbridge Historical Com- mission Date May 1986 NATIONAL REGISTER CRITERIA STATEMENT (if applicable) --- The Eugene Tapin House is signifigant for its association with the town's early twentieth century real estate development on the town's rural outskirts and its stylish Tudor design. It meets National Register criteria A and C at the local level and retains integrity of setting, location, materiais, workmanship, design, feeling, and association.
The boundaries indicated on the attached assessors map are those of current ownersnip. ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE Describe important architectural features and evaluate in terms of other buildings within the community. This is one of the few high style Tudor Revival houses in Southbridge. The major elements of the style is the false half timber and stucco infill representing the structural components of the house. The arched doorway has heavy double-leaved door-. Above the door is a small gablet. The red in the brick nearly matches the red of the roof tile. A particular feature found in the Lalibertes' residential work is the placement of an enclosed sunroom on the south side of the house and an open screened porch on the north side of the house.
HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE Explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the community. F. X. Laliberte and his architect son, Oswald, built this for - Lis daughter, Camille and her husband Eugene I. Tapin. Camille Tapin worked as a clerk in her father's business and her husband was a music teacher and the organist of Notre Dame Church. Oswald Laliberte was the first Franco-American architect in town, and his father was one of the major builders. The architectural pretentions of the house show the socio-economic advancement of the Franco-American community in Southbridge. The construction of this house here in the late-1920's was part of the gradual suburbanization of previously rural sections of Southbridge which occurred during the first half of the 20th-century.
At about the same time this house was built, CohassetFarm nearby was sub- divided by the Wells Family for large suburban family estates, forms #F-648(1927) and #F-603 (1932).
