Ceccacci Organization Southbridge Historical Cor- mission Date Mav 1986_ - NATIONAL REGISTER CRITERIA STATEMENT (if applicable) The Passenger Depot of the New York, New Haven, & Hartford Railroad is significant for its association with the expansion and development of Southbridge's commercial and institutional center late in the nineteenth century, and for its familiar form and Spanish Colonial design.

It, meets National Register critaria A and Cat the local level and retains integrity of setting, location, materials, workmanship, design, feeling, and association. The boundaries indicated on the attached assessors map are those of current ownership. ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE Describe important architectural features and evaluate in terms of other buildings within the community. This railroad.station is unusual in Southbridge for its exotic Spanish design and for the use of stucco and tile as building materials. The Spanish Style was popular in the United States during the early 20th century particularly for commercial buildings and for residences. Although the style was sometimes used in Central Massachusetts cities and towns, it was not particularly comnon. Recently rehabilitated for use as a center for senior citizens, the building is relatively unaltered.

The long tile roofed passenger shed which once stretched along trackside at the rear of the building is no longer standing. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE Explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the community. After numerous attempts to bring railroad service to Southbridge, the first train of the Blackstone & Southbridge Railroad arrived in town in November of 1866. The company was. re- organized as the New York & New England Railroad in 1873. Later it became the. New England Railroad a lessee of the Norwich & Worcester line. Finally in 1907 it was acquired by the New York, New Haven & Hartford Railroad. - The last train on the New Haven line left Southbridge from this depot in August of 1930.

A newspaper article published at that time attributed the removal of train service to the coming of trolley cars, buses and automobiles which had lessened the local demand for trains. With the exception of an altered brick freight depot which still stands on Central Street, this is believed to be the only railroad-related building still standing in Southbridge. The original passenger depot, freight house and engine house was located near the river on Crane Street, off of Hamilton Street.
