Hartwell House is signifisant for its association with the town's nid- 19 -century real estate development and its stylish brick Italianate design.
It meets National Register criteria A and C at the local level and retains integrity of location, materials, workmanship, design, feeling, and association. The boundaries indicated on the attached assessors map are t.hose of current ownership. ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE Describe important architectural features and evaluate in terms of other buildings within the community. An early example of an Italianate cottage, this is one of the few in town constructed in brick. Other surviving Italianate style houses of community leaders, such as the Chamberlain- Bourdeau House (form #A-134) and the James Gleason House (Main and Sayles Street) are ruch more imposing and less vernacular in appearance. While the Hartwell House has a gabled facade with side ell, these other two Italianate houses are of the more massive, boxy type with flat roof silhouettes and overhanging bracketed eaves.
Significant features of the Hartwell House are its bracketed entry porch, paired windows, labeled brick window caps and bracketed eaves. Brick additions, not visible from the street, were made to the rear in the 1870's and to the north side in the 1880's or 1890's. Set back from tbe street, the house still retains some of its original suburban estate setting. However, modern encroachments on either side of the driveway have damaged the historical setting when the house is viewed from the street. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE Explain the roie owners played in local or state history and how the anv building relates to the development of the community. When Hamilton Street was first opened in the early 1850's, it was developed as a suburban estate district. The Hartwell House was one of the earliest houses to be built on the Centre Village end of the street.
Like this house and the nearby Harrington House (form -#A-107), these early houses were set back from the street with ample front lawns. Later houses were built on smaller lots and closer to the street. Residences built here during the initial development of the area typically belonged to Centre Village businessmen who had offices or stores on Main Street. This house was built by Dr. George H. Hartwell, nephew of the prominent local physician Samuel Hartwell (see form #C-304). George Hartwell, who lived here as late as 1898, operated a pharmacy in the Hartwell Block on Main Street in the town center. The Hartwell block was originally owned by Samuel Hartwell and managed by George Hartwell. At least as early as 1870 the building was owned by George Hartwell. After Geroge Hartwell's death, the operation of the pharmacy was continued by his son and grandson, both also named George H.
