It meets National Register criteria A and C at the local level and retains integrity of location, design, feeling, and association. The boundaries indicated on the attached assessors map are those of current ownership. ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE Describe important architectural features and evaluate in terms of other buildings within the community. This Hamilton Street landmark is the only Shingle style commercial block in Southbridge. A go example of the adaptation of a structure to its site, the building takes it more or less tri- angular plan from the wedge of land on which it is situated at the corner of Hamilton and Cran With the exception of the removal of a clock from the upper portion of the corner tower, the appearance of the building had not changed greatly since its construction.

Althoug the glazing pattern of the display windows was altered in the early-20th century, the present design is not entirely out of character with the overall design of the building. The late- 19th century addition of second story verandas across the back of the structure does not signi ficantly affect the appearance of the building when seen from Hamilton Street. Characteristic of the Shingle style are the horizontal lines of the main body of the building, the sheathing of the entire building in wood shingle siding, the ampleness of the turret-like curved corner and the sculptural effect of the tower above. Also typical is the use of modifi Classical motifs such as the moulded modillions in the eave cornice. - HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE Explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the - building relates to the development of the community.

This block was built by Francis L. Chapin, an officer of the Southbridge National Bank and an active local real estate developer. About six months after the building was occupied, it was bought by J. J. Delehanty, a furniture dealer in Globe Village (see form #'A-148): The block was built to contain stores on the ground floor and a "society hall" on the second floor. In 1894 the building housed a grocery store, a clothing store, a barber, a tobacconist, a candy store and one vacant store. Although this section of Hamilton Street was mostly residential, a stores selling groceries, fruits, tobacco and paints were scattered along the north side of the street in other build- ings between Crane and Union Streets in 1894. The only concentration of stores in the neighborhood was in the Chapin Block. BIBLIOGRAPHY and/or REFERENCES - Curtis, John O. and Southbridge Historical Commission.
