It meets National Register criteria A and C at the local level and retains integrity of setting, location, materials, workmanship, design, feeling, and association.

The boundaries indicated on the attached assessors map are those of current ownership. ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE Describe important architectural features and evaluate in terms of other buildings within the community. A rare well preserved example of a Queen Anne Vernacular house in Southbridge, this is one of the best preserved and most elaborate late-19th century residences on this section of Hamilton Street. Outstanding features of the house are the one-story wrap-around porch and the elaborate stickwork and jigsaw-cut trim of the gable apron and bargeboard. At the rear of the house is an outside staircase, an element often seen on Southbridge houses which is believed to be of French Canadian origin. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE Explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the community.

Although Hamilton Street had been cut through in the 1850's, this section remained largely undeveloped until the 1880's. Houses were first built on the north side of the street bet- ween Crane Street and Union Street during the 1880's and 1890's. After the establishment of a separate French Canadian parish and the construction of a church on Pine Street in 1870, this area became popular among that ethnic group. The owner of this house, Alexis Boyer, was a major leader in the Franco-American community. He served in the State Legislature in 1907-1908, the State Senate in 1914 and was also on the State Democratic Committee. Boyer, a builder, is also known for having constructed numerous two and three deckers in Southbridge and for having trained other carpenter-builders who followed him in his trade.
