Woodford, ed. S. Ceccacci Organization Southbridge Historical Com- mission Date May 1986 NATIONAL REGISTER CRITERIA STATEMENT (if applicable) The William E. Alden House is significant for its association with the town's late- 19 th century real estate development and its adaptation of the familiar gabie-front form to the Queen Anne style.
It meets National Register criteria A and C at the local level and retains integrity of setting, location, materials, workmanship, design, feeling, and association. The boundaries indicated on the attached assessors map are those of current ownership. ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE Describe important architectural features and evaluate in terms of other buildings within the community. This is a handsome and well preserved example of a Victorian style house with Queen Anne over- tones. More elaborate and more original in plan and design than the typical middle class Victorian style of the period, it is less imposing than larger, grander houses such as the A.M. Cheney House on Chestnut Street (form #C-325). Victorian in its somewhat vertical lines, the house has a broad sweeping roof, ornamental panels and some shingle siding which are typical ly associated with the Queen Anne style.
Its turned porch posts and balusters are also of the Queen Anne style. Other features such as the asymmetrical design and the complexity of the roofline are common to both styles. The board and batten carriage house, with cupola and facade balcony is of the same style and makes a significant contribution to the historic feeling of the setting. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE Explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the bullding relates to the development of the community. This house was built as the home of William E. Alden, Jr., who with his father, William E. Alden, ran a grocery and dry goods business on Main Street in Globe Village. The store was located in the Alden Block (form /A-148) (1878-1888), a fine high style Victorian commercial block which they had built. It was the only brick commercial block in Globe Village.
The construction of this house was part of the earliest development of this section of Hamilton Street. In 1878, shortly before it was built, only the church next door and a small house to its east were standing here. The land across the street from it remained undeveloped until the early-20th century.
