Ceccacci Organization Southbridge Historical Com- mission Date May 1986 NATIONAL REGISTER CRITERIA STATEMENT (if applicable) Tne Napoleon LaRochelle Iwo-Family House is significant for its association with the town's late- 19th century real estate development and its adaptation of the familiar gable-front form to the Queen Anne stvle. It meets National Register criteria A and C,and retains integrity of setting, location, materials, workmanship, design, feeling, and association. The boundaries indicated on attached assessors map are the those of current ownership. ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE Describe important architectural features and evaluate in terms of other buildings within the community.
This two-and-a-half story Victorian Vernacular style house is typical of many one and two family houses built in Southbridge in the late-19th century.The popularty of the gable front plan with cross gable and side hall entrance, also commonly seen are the cross bracing and bargeboard ornament in the facade gable and the Stick style porch with basketweave railing. This house is an unusually well preserved example of this popular house type, still retaining its original trim, sash, and double leafed front doors. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE Explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the community. - Although Pine Street had been cut through as early as 1870 when the original Notre Dame Church was built on the east side, development was slow had been built on the street.
They were all on the west side and on the more southerly end of the street, which is on higher ground than the section near Hamilton Street. However, by 1894 the west side of the street had been completely developed as far south as Edwards Street (Pine Street was not cut through to Main Street until the early-20th century). The 1898 atlas shows that with only one exception, the owners of the houses on Pine Street all had French surnames. Attracted by the French Canadian parish, French Canadians appear to have developed Pine Street. The lot adjacent to the church property on the corner of Pine and Edwards Streets was still undeveloped in 1894, allowing the parish to buy it in 1898 in order to build a new parish school, Academie Brochu there in 1899.
The Napoleon Larochelle Rental House was one of two houses on Pine Street owned by Napoleon Larochelle, a polisher at American Optical Company. Located next door to each other, they were very similar in appearance. Larochelle lived in the one next door. It is likely that he built both at the same time, one to live in and one as a rental property. Larochelle's house has been altered.
