It meets National Register criteria A and C at the local level and retains integrity of location, materials, workmanship, design, feeling, and association. The boundaries indicated on the attached assessors map are those of current ownership. ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE Describe important architectural features and evaluata in terms of other buildings within the community.
The best preserved examnle of an Italianate residence in Southbridge; this two story, three bay house has been sightly altered. Characteristic of the style are the boxy shape of the main portion'of the house, the overhanging bracketed eaves, corner quoins, projecting window caps and the substantial entry porch with arch motif. Also retaining much of its original setting, the house sits back from the street in a spacious lawn with large old trees. During the same period, another large Italianate style house was built nearby on the opposite side of the street at the corner of Main and Sayles Street. It unfortunately has been altered by the application of synthetic siding. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE Explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the community.
A house belonging to Oliver Plimpton was shown occupying this site on the 1855 Southbridge map. Because of its orientation to the street and difference in plan, that house seems to have been an earlier dwelling. A descendant of William Plimpton who was one of the earliest settlers (ca. 1732) of Globe Village, Oliyer Plimpton was (at an unspecified date) superintendent of the cotton of the nearby Hamilton Woolen Company. A description of ?1impton's house in Davis" Sketch of Sturbridge and Southbridge indicates that an old dwelling was still standing on this site as late as 1856. The present I-plan house, the property of Capt. John Chamberlain or Chamberlin , first appeared on the 1870 Worcester County Atlas. Chamberlain was listed in the 1875-6 Southbridge directory as an insurance agent. After Capt. Chamberlain's death in the late 1870's, Mrs.
Chamberlain continued to live in the house until the late 1880's.' By 1898 the house had become the property of Gilbert Bourdeau, a box maker. Bourdeau lived here until about 1920. Before 1855, the Oliver Plimpton house was the only building on the north side of Main Street, west of the intersection of Main and South Streets. It is likely that a sizeable portion of this land, extending northward to Hamilton Street, belonged to the Plimpton house. Between 1855 and 1870 not only was the Chamberlain-Bourdeau House built but the Hamilton Mill Agent's House (form #A-135) next door to the west and several single and multifamily houses - east of it on Main and Union Streets were built. At that same time factory housing for the Hamilton Mill was built nearby on Union, New (Oliver) and Cross Streets.
