Leccacci organization Southbridge Historical, Com- niss1on Date May 1986 - NATIONAL REGISTER CRITERIA STATEMENT (if applicable) The Dunbar-Vinton House is significant as a rare small brick residence that may have originally served as a school, meeting National Register criterion C at the local level. It retains integrity of location, materials, workmanship, and design.
The boundaries indicated on the attached assessors map are those of current ownership. ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE Describe important architectural features and evaluate in terms of other buildings within the community. Published references to this small one-and-a-half story gable end brick building indicate that it was built as a residence. However, its design, with a tall arched entrance at the far end of the facade, suggests that it may, in fact, originally have been a schoolhouse. Although a clapboard addition to the west end of the facade was made in the early 1970's, the building is otherwise intact and well preserved. It retains 6/6 sash, granite sills and lintels and a six panel door. The surface of the exterior brick walls has unfortunately been damaged by abrasive cleaning.
HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE Explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the community. This building was mentioned in a report in the Quinebaug Historical Society Leaflets, written about 1901: "At the corner of Hook and Hamilton Streets is the dwelling of Albert E. Vinton. This was the home of Lemuel Dunbar and was built by Capt. Clemence over 70 years ago. Here Andrew W. Maray and Mrs. Lawson, mother of Mrs. C. D. Rose, attended a private school held by Mrs. Dunbar." If it is true that the structure was built by Clemence, it cannot have been built after 1828. Capt. Calvin Clemence died at the age of forty-five in February of that year. No documentation has been found to clarify whether Clemence had built the building for himself or as a builder for Dunbar.
However, in 1836 Moses Plimpton's History of Southbridge described the location (pre-1816) schoolhouse in the town center as having "stood where Mrs. Clemence now lives". This suggested connection between the building's ownership by Clemence and the fact that the building looks like a school is tantalizing. Also, the reference above to Mrs. Dunbar's holding a school here seems' to strengthen the possibility that the building might originally have been built as a school and that certain details in these reports were inaccurati Further research is necessary to determine the original use and early history of this unusual building. - BIBLIOGRAPHY and/or REFERENCES maps, atlases Holbrook.
