Ceccacci Organization Southbridge Historical Com- mission Date May 1986 NATIONAL REGISTER CRITERIA STATEMENT (if applicable) The William Hodgeson Iwo-Family House is significant as rare surviving housing of Southbridge's early mill development and for-its association with the development of Globe Village. It meets National Register criteria A and C at tne local level and retains integrity of setting, location, materials, workmanship, design, feeling, and association. The boundaries indicated on the attached assessors map .are those of current ownership.
ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE Describe important architectural features and evaluate in terms of other buildings within the community. This one-and-a-half story Greek Revival cottage was built to house two families. Oriented with the gables on the sides, it has a five bay facade with two entrances, each with a transom light, within a single doorframe at the center. Typical of its date of construction, it has substantial paneled corner pilasters gables with frieze and gable returns and a full Classical architrave at the eaves. This house is an excellent and well preserved example of a mid-19th century multifamily house. It is one of only two relatively unaltered mid- 19th century houses on Sayles Street. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE Explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the community.
Sayles Street and nearby High Street were developed in the mid-19th century under the influence of the Hamilton Woolen Company. A great period of population growth in Globe Village resulted from the introduction in 1844 of the manufacture of delaines cloth by the company which was accompanied by the expansion of both the physical plant and the workforce. Skilled English and Scottish worsted workers, as well as additional American workers, were attracted to the mill and needed places to live nearby. During the 1840's and 1850's Hamilton Woolen sold off house lots on High and Sayles Streets with the provision that the purehaser build a house with a value of at least $1000. Lots were first sold on High Street. - Lots on Sayles Street were sold between 1849 and 1852. By 1855 houses had been built on most of the west side of the street. The east side was still largely undeveloped.
Houses on that side were built mostly during the 1850's and 1860's. Records show that many of the lots on the two streets were bought by Globe Village business- men who apparently had houses built and then sold them to others. Houses in this area appear to have been occupied by supervisors, foremen and skilled craftsmen from the mill and by merchants and businessmen as well.
