Ceccacci Organization Southbridge Historical Com- mission Date May 1986 NATIONAL REGISTER CRITERIA STATEMENT (if applicable) 64 Main Street is significant for its association with the town's lata_ 19th century real estate development and its stylish Queen Anne design.
It meets National Register criteria A and C at the local level and retains integrity of location, naterials, workmanship, design, feeling, and association. The boundaries indicated on the attached assessors map are those of current ownership. ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE Describe important architectural features and evaluate in terms of other buildings within the community. The pattern book style of this house is seen elsewhere in Southbridge as well, (e.g., corner of Elm and Dresser Streets, 1878-1898). A vernacular expression of the Queen Anne style, it has elements characteristic of the style such as decorative shingles in the gables, diamond- patterned slate shingles and an ornate wrap-around porch. Colonial Revival elements such as the central door' flanked by half sidelights and Classical window frames were also seen here.
Of note is a fine stained glass panel in the upper portion of the ground floor window of the -as panalt the the uper e corner bay. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE Explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the community. Ihroughout most of the 19th-century, this section of Main Street was part of a suburban estate district. With the growth of the town during the late-19th century, this section was gradually broken up into smaller lots with more houses built closer together. The vicinity of this end of Main Street to the ever more prosperous American Optical Company factory nearby caused the area to change character as the century drew to a close. This house and the multi-family house next door to the west (form #B-211) both appear to have been built by American Optical president, George W.
Wells, who lived just west of here on Main Street. During the second decade of the 20th-century, after Wells' death, other houses were built in this same area on Walnut and Maple Streets (form #B-210) to house American Optical Company employees. It is not clear whether 64 Main Street was ever used as employee housing by the company. It is likely that it was, however, since numerous other houses built by persons with economic interests in the company were later apparently bought by the company for use as company housing Its vicinity to other houses known to have served that same purpose also increases such likelihood.
