Ceccacci Organization Southbridge Historical Com- mission Date May 1986 NATIONAL REGISTER CRITERIA STATEMENT (if applicable) 52 Main Street is signific.ant as an example of the distinctive regional multi-family housing type known as the triple decker, ornamented in a distinctly French Canadian fashion, and constructed during the growth of the town's eastern section late in the 19th century. It meets National Register criteria A and C at the local level and retains integrity of setting, location, materials, workmanship, design, feeling, and association. The boundaries indicated on the attached assessors map - are tnose of current ownership. ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE Describe important architectural features and evaluate in terms of other buildings within the community.

This three and a half story multifamily dwelling has a gable roof and wrap-around porches on three floors does not follow a standard three decker pattern. Although the three deckers seen in Southbridge take a variety of forms, most typically have flat or low hipped roofs. The use of galleries on more than one side of the building and the use of outside stairs as seen here (both possibly French Canadian elements) are common to Southbridge three deckers. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE Explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the developmen of the community. The development of this section of Main Street with multifamily dwellings occurred during the first two decades of the 20th-century in response to the sustained success and prosperity of the nearby American Optical Company. During this period larger house lots were subdivided and developed.

In the case of this lot, an earlier two story house was replaced with a much larger multifamily dwelling.
