It meets National Register criteria A and C at the local level and retains integrity of setting, location, materials, workmanship, design, feeling, and association. The boundaries indicated on the attached assessors map are those of current ownership.
ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE Describe important architectural features and evaluate in terms of other buildings within the community. This two-and-a-half story house is representative of some of the larger houses built in the neighborhood near American Optical around the turn of the century. Ihe gable front, side hall plan of the front section of the house was the most popular house plan in Southbridge and in Central Massachusetts all during the second half of the 19th-century The porches and shingle trim in the facade gable are the major ornamental elements. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE Explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the community. Larger houses such as this replaced some of the smaller cottages which had been built in this area during its initial period of development during the 1870's and 1880's.
Around the turn of the century a number of existing houses on Crystal Street were enlarged and other new houses, some multifamily, were built here.
