Ceccacct Organization Southbridge Historical Commis- SiOn Date May 1986 NATIONAL REGISTERCRITERIA STATEMENT (if applicable) The Vinton-Boardman House, is significant for its association with the settiement period of Southbridge's history, the subsequent persistence of its agricultural economy, and its Federal style ornament and form.

It meets National Register criteria A and Cat the local level and retains integrity of setting, location, nateriais, workmanship, design, feeling, and association. The boundaries marked on the attached assessors map are those of current ownership and include the surviving contributing resources in a rural setting. ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE Describe important architectural features and evaluate in terms of other buildings within the community. This house is Southbridge's only well-preserved example of a two-story five bay, double pile, Federal style house with gable roof and end chimneys. The end chimney house plan, which was not unheard of but was much less popular than the central or double chimney plan during the Georgian period, became increasingly popular in the Federal period.

In central Massachusetts the majority of end-chimney houses appear to have been built between about 1800 and 1830. Houses appear so have Resting on a granite foundation, this house still retains its original appearance and distinctive ornament. Still intact are its 12/12 sash, a dentil range in the eaves and a hand- * some entrance with 3/4 sidelights, a graceful fanlight and an arched doorframe ornamented with a groove and starburst pattern and a keystone at top. The ell at the rear may be the original house. However, further investigation is necessary to verify this possibility. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE Explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the community. The front section of this house was built about 1825 by Deacon Joshua Vinton, who died in 1842.

The rear ell is believed to be an earlier house built by the same family in the late-18th century. Southbridge maps for 1855 and 1878 show that the house was later owned by Charles W. Vinton a son or grandson of Joshua Vinton In 1898, it was the property of Mrs. C. R. Boardman. This section of Southbridge was settled in 1738 by John Vinton who bought 930 acres from Samuel Morris of Woodstock. Numerous other Vinton farmhouses were scattered through this ,section of Southbridge by the mid-19th century. Across the road from the Vinton-Boardman house is the Vinton-Iorrey Farmhouse, 1841 (see form B-244), the only other well-preserved farmhouse relating to this family of early settlers.
