Hartwell House is significant for its association with the tawn's mid-nineteenth century real estate development and its stylish brick Queen Anne design.
It meets National Register criteria A and C at the iocal level and retains integrity of location, materisls, workmanship, design, feeling, and association. The boundaries indicated on the attached assessors map are those of current ownership. ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE Describe important architectural features and evaluate in terms of other buildings within the community. An early example of the Queen Anne style, this brick house is unusual for Southbridge not only for its very early date but also for its extremely high quality of construction. At a time whe: the vertical design of the Victorian Gothic style was just beginning to be popular in South- bridge, the emphasis of this house is distinctly horizontal in the manner of the very new Queen Anne style.
Although it does not bear the typical shingled or slated upper story or the decorative terracotta panels commonly associated with the style, the asymmetrical heavy massing horizontal emphasis and picturesque roofline broken by turrets, gables and heavy chimneys is almost entirely Queen Anne in inspiration. The asymmetrical massing of the house with its two turrets gives it a picturesque silhouette. Decorative detailing includes contrasting stone coursing, glazed brick segmental arched panels above the windows, a projecting porch with stickwork ornament and a patterned polychrome slate roof. The heavy Queen Anne style chimneys with ornamental brickwork also make an important contribution to the overall massive appearance of the house.
In its massiveness, masonry construction and imposing appearance, the Samuel Hartwell House is similar to the Congregational Church and the Iown Hall to its north. This similarity makes it a visually integral part of the civic focal point of the town. This house was built on the site of an earlier house also occupied by Dr. Hartwell and his father before him. That house had been built in 1818 by Major Calvin Ammidown and deeded to the Congregational Church (form #C-303) as "The Ministerial House". It originally served as the parsonage and as the hall of worship until the meeting house was erected. Dr. Samuel Cyrus Hartwell (1820-1885) was a prominent physician and an active citizen of Southbridge. His father was Dr. Samuel Hartwell, also a physician.
His mother was Lydia Ammidown, the daughter of Calvin Ammidown and the sister of Ebenezer D. Ammidown. In 1844 the younger Dr. Hartwell married Ellen Maria Plimpton the daughter of Moses Plimpton and Edna Taylor Hartwell began his study of medicine with his father and later went on to study at a medical college in Philadelphia, where he took his M.D. degree in 1839. Returning to Southbridge, he joined his father's practice. He spent one year in New York associated with an "eminent specialist, Dr. Green." After returning home permanently, he "built up an extensive and lucrative patronage, and came to be recognized by the profession as a most skillful and painstaking physician." During the Civil War as the position of medical director of General Emery's division. Dr. Hartwell was also involved in civic affairs. He served in various local offices and was - for many years Town Moderator.
He was also vital in the establishment of a public library for - the town. In 1881 he was elected to the Massachusetts Senate. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE (cont'd) The Hartwell House was built at a time of industrial growth and expansion in Southbridge which was causing houses to be built in Centre Village, some distance from the Main Street Large houses of the town's leading citizens were being built on Hamilton Street and west of the center along Main Street. This house joined the 1830's Tiffany-Leonard House (form #C-301) on Elm Street and the ca. 1870 Sylvester Dresser House (form #C-308) on Summer Street to make this section around the Town Hall and Congregational Church another elegant neighborhood. Set back from the street and surrounded by spacious lawns, these houses and buildings made an imposing appearance. When it was built and until after the turn of the century, the Hartwell house was the only house on the block between Park and Summer Streets.
Its lawn met the large lawn of the Dresser House on Summer Street, creating an almost park- like setting for both houses.
