White NATIONAL REGISTER CRITERIA STATEMENT (if applicable) The Marshall Symmes House is important as a rare example in Winchester of a brick-ended Federal period dwelling, and for its associations with the Symmes family, whose members were among Winchester's first settlers. The Marshall Symmes House therefore meets Criteria A and C of the National Register of Historic Places. ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE Describe important architectural features and evaluate in terms of other buildings within the community. The Marshall Symmes House (c.1817) is a well-preserved example of a brick-ended Federal period house. The Marshall Symmes House is one of two dwellings dating from the Federal period associated with the Symmes family.

The other is the nearby Deacon John Symmes House (#298), circa 1807, 212-214 Main Street. The Marshall Symmes House is a two and one-half story, rectangular plan dwelling with a gable roof of low pitch, and paired end chimneys. It exhibits the characteristic five-bay facade of the Federal style, with paired outer windows and the center window aligned with the entrance. Notable features include the center entrance with leaded glass fanlight and sidelights, and the narrow corner pilasters. The Reverend Zachariah Symmes, minister of the Charlestown Church, received a land grant of approximately 300 acres centered around present-day Symmes corner. Although Reverend Symmes remained in Charlestown, his sons moved to Winchester and began farming shortly after 1650. Marshall Symmes, a grandson of Zachariah Symmes, lived from 1789-1889. Marshall was a blacksmith with a shop at the corner of Main and Bacon streets. He built this house in 181?, at the time of his marriage to Relief (Lephe) Stowell (Ior whom nearby Stowell Road is named): Marshall's brother John was the Deacon of the Medford Congregational Church, and lived in the nearby house (c.1807) at 212-214 Main Street. The Marshall Symmes House has been in continuous ownership by members of the Symmes family from the time of its construction in c.1817 until the present.
