White NATIONAL REGISTER CRITERIA STATEMENT (if applicable) The Patience & Sarah Gardner House is an important local example of the late Federal style and is associated with the Gardner family, whose members were among Winchester's earliest settlers. The Patience & Sarah Gardner House therefore meets Criteria A and C of the National Register of Historic Places. ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE Describe important architectural features and evaluate in terms of other buildings within the community.
The Patience & Sarah Gardner House is a vernacular example of the Federal style, a building type associated with the rural economy of Winchester during the early years of the nineteenth century. the available evidence supports a construction date between 1825 and ate 1835. This house is thought to have been built on the foundation oI an earlier dwelling, built by Richard Gardner. Richard Gardner, an ancestor of Patience and Sarah, bought 300 acres from Increase Nowell in 1659. The present house is a two and one-half story, rectangular plan dwelling with a gable roof of low pitch. A single rear wall chimney offset to the right survives. The five-bay facade organization consists of paired outer windows, with the center window aligned with the entrance.
The slender entrance door reflects earlier Georgian period HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE Explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the community. A house in this location owned by Patience Gardner appears on the 1831 map of Winchester, in the part of town that was formerly included in Medford. Patience and Sarah Gardner acquired the property in 1825 from Benjamin Wyman, a relative (husband?) of their sister Lucy Gardner Wymna. The sisters lived here until their deaths in 1864 and 1857. In 1868 Abijah Thompson, bought the Gardner land, and sold or mortgaged several lots of the original property. Thompson sold the property in 1872 to George Rand and Frank Weston, ty 1n 1872 whomade a contract to "improve" the land. They in turn sold it to John Magee in 1874. Joseph Tyler bought the house and land in 1883.
Tyler was a member of the Winchester School Committee and Town Hall Committee. The house has been erroneously called the "1776 House" Three hundred acres of land surrounding the Gardner house were originally granted to Increase Nowell. He never built upon it, and parts of it for almost 200 years. With the death of Richard Gardner, One of his four sons, John, went to Harvard, and later became the minister of Stow. - John's son Henry was Treasurer of the Commonwealth during the Revolution.
