SCALE 1:25,000 Recorded by Bettina Cooper Organization Winchester Historical Comn Date 8/78: 10/87 revised by H, White (prior to 1929, address listed as 169 Cambridge Street) NATIONAL REGISTER CRITERIA STATEMENT (if applicable) The George Wyman House is an important local example of a transitional Federal-Greek Revival farmhouse, and has associations with the Wyman family, one of Winchester's earliest families, eminent in town affairs. Therefore the George Wyman House meets Criteria A and C of the National Register of Historic Places. ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE Describe important architectural features and evaluate in terms of other buildings within the communtty. The George Wyman House is a well-preserved vernacular farmhouse which exhibits the transition from the Federal to the Greek Revival style in local domestic architecture.
The Wyman house is a two and a Federal period dwelling, although the trabeated entrance with sidelights and the six-over-six window sash foreshadow the Greek Revival mode. The interior contains wide pine flooring, a delicate floating stair, and numerous passageways. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE Explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the community. In 1798, the U.S. Government ordered each of the state to conduct a survey of real estate for purposes of taxation.- The survey listea approximately 35 houses within the bounds of present-day Winchester. Among the families owning.houses were the Wymans. Circa 1750 Hezekiah Wyman came from old Woburn to live on Plain Street (present-day Cambridge Street).
Hezekiah Wyman was the famous "White Horseman" whose exploits occurred on April 19, 1775., Local tradition states that a gray- haired Yankee horseman mounted on a powerful white steed, harassed the British during their retreat from Concord. Hezekiah was fifty-five on the morning of the Lexington alarm. He was a son of Capt. Seth Wyman, and great-grandson of Major William Johnson, eminent in the political and military life of early Woburn and the Massachusetts Bay Colony. Hezekiah's house was not far from the corner of Cambridge and! Wildwood Streets. He bought and owned a great part of the level land of Winchester's present-day West Side residential area, often referred to as "the Flats" - - This land was formerly known as "Wyman Plains." After Hezekiah's death, it was owned by his son Daniel, and by his sons, Marshall, William and George.

HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE: the very first houses erected in present-day Winchester; it was built by Richard Gardner's family circa 1660. The cellar hole of the Gardner was visible until the nineteenth century. The Wyman family acquired the surrounding land and possibly the Gardner house during the 1700s.
However, the house which presently stands on the site was built between 1826 and 1831 by George Wyman, a grandson of Hezekiah Wyman. George was a farmer and cordwainer.
