NATIONAL REGISTER CRITERIA STATEMENT (if applicable) The stanton House is notable as the only local example of a high- styled temple front Greek Revival house.
The Stanton House is also significant for its associations with Deacon Nathan Johnson, a local blacksmith, whose shop furnished large amounts of iron for the Boston and Lowell Railroad construction during the 1030s. Therefore the Stanton House meets Criteria B and C of the National Register of Historic Places. ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE Describe important architectural features and evaluate in terms of other buildings within the community. The Stanton House is an exceptionally well-preserved example of a temple-front type of Greek Revival house, and Winchester's only example of this style. The Stanton House is a two-and-one-half story structure sited with its gable end to the street. The most prominent feature of the house is the two-story classical portico, with columns of a composite order.
The tympanum and facade are flush-boarded in an attempt to simulate the ashlar masonry of the Greek temple prototype. The entrance is offset to the left with transom and sidelights. First and second story windows on the facade are full-length with a six-over-nine sash configuration. Other noteworthy features are the shaped window lintels and the elaborate iron grillwork of the portico, possibly fabricated in Nathan Johnson's blacksmith shop. A two-and-one-half story gable roofed ell is attached to the north west corner of the house. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE Explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the community. The Stanton House was built circa 1840 by Deacon Nathan Brooks Johnson . (1792-1871) a successful local blacksmith whose shop stood beside the house. .
The Johnson family owmed considerable land in the immediate vicinity, and the houses of five of Nathan's brothers stood nearby. Nathan and his brother Francis were partners in the blacksmith shop, and produced a variety of articles in iron, including the forged knives for the leather splitting machines in the utter mill. The furnished great amounts of hardware, iron and tie bolts for the new Boston & Lowell Railway. Nathan was active torm and church affairs. He was a deacon of the Woburn Congregational Church, and later of the Winchester Congregational Church when it split off from the Woburn church. Johnson was also named to Winchester's first Board of Selectmen in 1850.
