White Formerly known as 108 Main St. (until 1905) NATIONAL REGISTER CRITERIA STATEMENT (if applicable) The Hutchinson-Blood House is notable as one of a number of local examples of the work of builder John H. Coats; and is a well-preserved example of a vernacular Greek Revival farmhouse which retains a portion of the ample grounds, evoking its original setting.
House therefore meets Criterion,C of the National Register of Historic Places. ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE Descríbe important architectural features and evaluate in terms of . other buildings within the community. The Hutchinson-Blood House was built circa 1840 and illustrates the gradual transition from the Federal to the Greek Revival style in local domestic architecture. The Hutchinson-Blood House is a two-and-a-half story rectangular plan dwelling With a gable roof. Although in form and plan the house is little changed from its Federal predecessors, the six- over-six configuration of the window sash, and the trabeated entrance are Greek Revival in character. The Hutchinson-Blood House was constructed by active local builder, John H. Coats, whose other known works include at least a dozen houses along Main Street built during the 1840s and 1850s.
The Hovey-Winn House (1841, #269) which stands next door at 384 Main Street is also the work of John Coats. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE Explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the community. The Hutchinson-Blood House was built during a period of increased of the Boston & Lowell Railroad building activity in winchester, in 185ht about largety by the completion The character of the town was changing from that of a collection of scattered farms to a busy commercial area. Jonn h. Coats, the bullder, bullt this house for his wife's parents, Samuel & Lucetta Hutchinson. Itowas erected on the site of an earlier house owmed by Zachariah Symmes, and stands opposite the site of the well-known Black Horse Tavern.
After the death of Samuel Hutchinson, his widow Luçetta continued to live there until the time of her death in 1896 at age ninety-six. Their daughter Iydia ( a sister of Coat's wife) married Cyrus Blood, and occupied the northem end of the house for some years. Lydia Hutchinson Blood was active in the Ladies' Western Missionary Society and the Women's Christian Temperance Union. Her husband, Cyrus Blood was a carpenter, who had moved to Florida by 1891, and was occupied as a fruit grower.
