White NATIONAL REGISTER CRITERIA STATEMENT (if applicable) The Hovey-Winn House is notable as one of few local examples of an unusual cottage form of the Greek Revival style, with an overshot front gable forming an integral full-width portico. Therefore the Hatch House meets Criterion C of the National Register of Historic Places. ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE Describe important architectural features and evaluate in terms of other buildings within the community. The Hovey-Winn House was built circa 1841 by active local builder John H. Coats, whose other known' works include at least a dozen houses along Main Street built during the 1840s and 1850s. The Hovey-Winn House is a one-and-a-half story cottage with a steeply pitched gable roof. The front gable is overshot forming an integral full-width Doric portico. Iwo gabled dormers with six-over-six sash are on the front slope of the roof.

A rear ell in several stages is offset to the left. The center entrance is enframed by a characteristic Greek Revival panelled door surround with sidelights to the Horace The Hovey-Winn House bears a strong resemblance Hatch House (c.1835,#332) at 26 Grove Street. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE Explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the conmunity. The Hovey-Winn House was built during a period of rapid change in - Winchester. The town was evolving from a community of scattered farms to a thriving, busy village. The arrival of the Boston & Lowell Railroad in 1835 was largely responsible for the change and for the introduction Of commerce into the previously rural economy. The Hovey-Winn House was built along the early road to Woburn, and stands set back from the road on a raised site.

Earlier occupants of the house include the Reverend William Eustis (the second minister of the First Congregational Church); Josiah Hovey, a druggist and the first town clerk of Winchester; Hovey's - son-in-law, Dennis Winn, who owned the town's first livery stable, and Postmaster William Fitch.
