4703810 USES QUADRANGLE LEXINGION, MASS SCALE 1:25,000 Recorded by Allen Hill, Carol Ely Organization Winchester Historical Comm Date 11/78; revised 10/87 by H.White - NATIONAL REGISTER CRITERIA STATEMENT (if applicable) The Zachariah Richardson House is significant as a Greek Revival Style house that incorporates parts of an earlier structure and fulfills Criterion C. -Because of its associations with the Richärdson family, settled in present-day Winchester by 1642, the Richardson House meets Criterion A of the National Register of Historic Places. ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE Describe important architecturai features and evaluate in terms of other buildings within the community. The Zachariah Richardson House appears to have been built on the foundation of an earlier structure, and parts of an earlier structure may have been re-used and incorporated into the framing oi the present house.
This was a common practice during the late eighteenth and early-mia nineteenth century. The present house stands on land that was formerly the front yard of Zachariah Richardson's house.*The structure may incorporate all or part of a schoolhouse erected in 1794, and moved in ....further north, becoming Zachariah Richardson's shoe shop." (History of Winchester, p.122). Maps show that by 1854 it had become a residence occupied by J.Eaton; by I.A. Wyman from 1865-1889; and Granville Richardson from 1889-1962. The Richardson House is a two and one-half story dwelling based on an elongated rectangular plan, with a gable roof of low pitch. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE Explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the community.
All of the land in the northeastern part of Winchester (formerly part of Woburn) was occupied from the first settlement by the three Richardson brothers, Ezekiel, Samuel and Ihomas. Ezekiel had arrived at Charlestown by 1630, and was appointed to its first board of selectmen in 1634. His brothers joined him circa 1636. Despite their youth all three were named commissioners from the Charlestown church and assigned to create a settlement and church in Woburn. By 1642 the Richardson - are e pn henaiaton ftrot, tin brothers were living on adjoining farms in winchester, in the vicinity of present day Washington Street. At one time there were eignt kicnarason Iamilies living along Washington street, which was appropriately known as Richardson's Row. * Zachariah Richardson's house stands nearby at 607 Washington Street. The three bays of the north section of the house contain much lighter framing.
