Jenkins NATIONAL REGISTER CRITERIA STATEMENT (if applicable) The Dike-Orne House possesses integrity of location, design, setting, materials, workman- ship, feeling and associations. It is significant as the best preserved farmstead to survive in the eastern half of Winchester, and for its unusual Gothic Revival style de- tailing. The house has undergone some alterations as it has evolved over time but it still clearly reflects its connected farmstead form and its Gothic Revival derivations.
Winchester retains an unusually large collection of Gothic Revival style cottages dating from the mid-19th century, and although this is not the most sophisticated, it does serve to illustrate that this rare style was occasionally used for farmsteads as well as suburban ARCOTRCIURAI SICNFICANite DesCri Doscribe importanonarchitestural featutor and acaluate in terms of features and other buildings within the community. The Dike-Orne House is a New England connected farmstead unusual for its survival in the eastern half of Winchester and for its Gothic Revival style detailing. The main house is a two story, wood-frame structure enclosed by a gable roof and facing its gable end to the street.
Its narrow two bay central section is flanked by side gable wings; that to the west retains its original overshot gable form while that to the east has been encased by an early 20th century glazed sunporch and has had the rear slope of its roof raised. Surviving original trim includes vergeboards in the gable, along the eaves, at the roof- line of the west wing, and at the top of an oriel window positioned on the central block. The house is extended to the west by an attached shed and barn. This connected farm- stead form developed in New England in the mid-19th century and continued to be used well into the 20th century. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE Explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the community.
- This house was built c1850 by the Dike family in a rather remote location on the Stoneham Winchester town line which was not finally set until 1864 when Luther Richardson, Lyman , Dike and the town of Stoneham reached an agreement. In 1865,, the house was purchased by Joshua Orne, a shoe cutter employed in one of Stoneham's many shoeshops. From 1889-1912 it was owned by Abbey Warren, a mason. It was then owned by Myron & Mary Warren for 30 years. The house indicates that some of the tradesman class that arose in the 19th cen- tury continued with traditional farming activities to supplement their income. . .
