Jenk: 1s -- NATIONAL REGISTER CRITERIA STATEMENT (if applicable) The S.B. White House possesses integrity of location, design, setting, materials, workman- feeling and association.

It is significant as an exceptionally well designed and preserved example of the Gothic Revival style featuring icicle-like vergeboards on steeply pitched gable roofs and label moldings over its windows. As one of the most advanced re- presentations of the Gothic Revival style in a town noted for its numerous examples of this generally rare style (see forms #215, 230, 232, 171, 276, 429, 443), it meets criterion C of the National Register of Historic Places. ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE Describe important architectural features and evaluate in terms of other buildings within the community. The Wnite House is a 1t story wood-frame dwelling enclosed by a steeply pitched gable roof with central cross gable. It is clad with clapboards and trimmed with icicle-like verge- boards and pronounced label moldings over the windows.

Although its prominent central cross gable would ordinarily indicate symmetrical facade treatment, the three bay facade actually, displays a sidehall configuration with the entry located in the northern bay. The entry is framed by sidelights and fronted by a gabled porch that appears to have been added in the late 19th century. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE Explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the community. This small Gothic Revival style cottage was constructed c1850 by Samuel B. White, Jr. who retained ownership until c1875 when he built a larger house at the corner of Stevens and Mt. Vernon Streets. White was one of the founders of the Congregational Church (Winchester Center H.D.; NR: 1987) and the first treasurer of the town after its incorporation in 1850. Later owners include: Silas D.

Andrews (1876-1888), Professor G. Cook (1889-1892), Mary L. Miller-(1893-1909) and Albert P. Reed (1910-1945). BIBLIOGRAPHY and/or REFERENCES Chapman, Henry Smith. History of Winchester, Mass. 1936.
