Mann House possesses integrity of location, design, setting, materials, work- manship, feeling and associations. It is significant as an unusual picturesque cottage that combines elements of Italianate and Gothic Revival design, while reflecting the ideals of such mid-19th century pattern book writers as A.J.
Downing- Built by its carpenter owner, it illustrates Winchester's fast growing popularity as a fashionable suburb. It meets criteria A and C of the National Register of Historic Places. The Mann House is an unusual mid-19th century picturesque cottages displaying some feag tures. of the Gothic Revival stylea It is a diminutive li story structure built on a I- plan. The stem of the I projects forward from the facade and is surrmounted by tower with . jerkin-headed roof and vergeboardssirThecmain body of the building is enclosed by a double gable roof whose form resembles a monitor; finials and vergeboards highlight the gable ends.
The house is sheathed withdclapboards and trimmed with wide cornerboards with a beaded edge, a water table and a frieze with modified dentils. A double leaf door with round arched glazing ismlocated on theuleft side of the tower beneath a shed roofed porch. Mann has also been identified as the builder of the Carr-Jeeves House (#537), another cottage gf unusual design. The Mann house was the first house to be built on Hancock Street, on land owned by Jerome B. Judkins (#164), a carpet dealer.
