White 10/87 NATIONAL REGISTER CRITERIA STATEMENT (if applicable) The Harrison Parker House is a rare example of an Italian villa in Winchester, and is notable as the residence of Harrison Parker, a prosperous local mill owner during the mid nineteenth century. fore the Harrison Parker House meets criteria B and J of the National Register of Historic Places. The Harrison Parker House also meets the Criteria Exception B of a moved property.
ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE Describe important architectural features and evaluate in terms of other buildings within the community. This imposing Italian villa epitomizes the mid nineteenth century taste for picturesque suburban houses, appropriate for the scenic rural The Parker House is a two-and-one-half story residence, based on a I-plan, with porches on three elevations, and a one-story bay the rear. The hip roof is of extremely low pitch, giving the appearance of being flat. The widely overhanging cornice is is decorated with closely spaced brackets. The exterior of the Parker House is clad with clapboards, with a string course between the floors. Windows have a six-over-six sash con- figuration; the upper story windows are round-headed. The attic windows are a rectangular, three-light type, set into the architrave.
The round-headed entrance door has sidelights, and a transom conform- ing to the contour of the arch. There are corbelled brick chimneys on the main block and the service wing. Continued on continuation sheet. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE Explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the community. Harrison Parker (1812-1890) played an important role in the nineteenth century industrial life of Winchester. - Parker was raised by an uncle who - was a cabinetmaker in the town of Reading. During the early 1830s Parker took over the old Jeduthan Richardson mill on Washington Street (site of - the present-day Winn-McCord Industries factory, formerly called the Winn - Watch Hand Company). Parker married a member of the Richardson family. In his factory/mill Parker cut mahogany veneers. His brother, Parker, was his partner.
In 1841 Parker - bought the old Converse mill site and moved his business there. He utilized a new technique oi shaving rather than sawing the wood veneers, with a machine he developed. For years, teams of eight and ten horses which drew the great logs of mahogany and rosewood from the ships at Boston to the Parker mill were a familiar sight along the road to Winchester. Eventually the Parker business moved to Charlestown where the owner had established large yards for the sale of mahogany and other tropical woods. On the rear of the house stands a one-story bay with rounded corners. The house sits on a foundation of random dressed fieldstone. The upper stage of the original tower has been removed, possibly circa 1920. The interior reflects Harrison Parker's business in fine woods. It includes a variety of elaborate moldings, balusters, and other wood detail.
The first house on the site of the Parker House, was the Horace Hatch House (circa 1835, #332), which was moved to its present location at 26 Grove Street, probably in 1843 when the land was sold to Harrison Parker. When the Unitarian Church was built (circa 1899, #309, NR-1987) the Harrison Parker House was moved to its present site at 60 Iloyd Street.
