NATIONAL REGISTER CRITERIA STATEMENT (if applicable) The Parker House is a rare local example of the Italian villa style as it was miniaturized for smaller dwellings. Therefore the Parker House meets Criterion C of the National Register of Historic Places. ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE Describe important architectural features and evaluate in terms of other buildings within the community. The Parker House is a I-plan Italianate residence designed in the "Tuscan villa" mode of the mid-nineteenth century. It is a type usually associated with more elaborate examples than this modest residence. The "Tuscan villa" mode was popularized" by the publications of A.J. Downing, and was considered appropriate for the scenic rural landscape. The Parker House stands on higher ground just west of the town center; its early occupants no doubt enjoyed picturesque views from the house's cupola.
The Parker house is flushboarded and scored in an attempt to simulate ashlar masonry. Windows are six-over-six throughout, with those on the lower story of the facade being full-length. The entrance is offset to the right of the three-bay facade. A three-sided veranda with curviliner posts encircles the lower story. The porch frieze, eaves, and cupola are HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE Explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the community. The first owner of the house was I. Baker, who resided there from 1854 to 1864, and may have been related to the builder, Kenelum Baker. The second owner of the house was Andrew Allison, a Boston businessman employed at Chaffee, Allison & Company, at 10 South Market, Boston. Ailison lived in the Parker House from 1865-1900. The next occupant, 1 188-9900 Dr.
John French, resided in the house from 1901 - 1918, and used the En 1947100% as'his medical offices. ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE continued, embellished with a simple scallopped moulding. The windows and entrance door are set beneath label mouldings, which consist of simple applied wooden ornament. There are paired scroll brackets at the eaves. A square cupola with round-headed window openings and smaller scale paired brackets sits atop the house.
The Parker House stands on a site elevated somewhat from the street; the property is delineated by a fieldstone retaining wall with a granite capstone. The builder of the Parker House was Kenelum Baker, a local builder whose own house is located at 4 Norwood Street (1856, #386). Baker also did the plans and specifications for the Adams School, (1857, demolished) which stood on Swanton Street, near the corner of.
