White 10/87 Formerly: 109 Main St. (pre-1905) NATIONAL REGISTER CRITERIA STATEMENT (if applicable) The Vinton House is notable as one of Winchester's finest examples aiso exmoryalanen durine the eastend4su of a conservative, mid-century Italianate residence. The Vinton House built by prosperous Boston businessmen during the early days of suburbanization in Winchester. Therefore the Vinton House meets Criteria A and C of the National Register of Historic Places.
ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE Describe important architectural features and evaluate in terms of other buildings within the community. The Vinton House is a two-and-one-half story Italianate house, based on a rectangular plan. The eaves overhang the cornice and are embellished with scroll brackets with pendant drops. The three-bay facade has a center entrance with an elaborate molded surrouna..! The entrance door has upper panels of glass, and is flanked by half-sidelights of leaded glass. entrance is set within an open entrance porch with chamfered posts and scroll brackets. Windows are six-over-six with bracketed sills. Windows of the lower story have bracketed hoods, with those of the facade being full-length. The center window above the entrance is round-headed; the paired gable windows have segmental arched openings.
The facade of the Vinton House is scored and flushboarded in an attempt to simulate ashlar masonry, A one- story ell stands to the rear. There is a one-story polygonal bay on the south elevation. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE Explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the community. This house was built sometime just prior to 1854 by Gardner Symmes, a well-known local builder during the mid-nineteenth century. Symmes owned the house from 1854-1864, and possibly lived there himself. By 1865 the house had been sold to Alfred C. Vinton, a Winchester lawyer, and prominent financial backer of the newly organized Winchester Hospital. Alfred Vinton also was the author of the Symmes Memorial. Vinton's wife Mable was a member of the Symmes family.
In 1892 Vinton entered a partnership with neighbor Sarah Lunt, for the laying out and sale of houselots on nearby Fairview Terrace, a cul-de-sac laid out between the Vinton and Iunt estates.
